CDL Training Information

Training Steps

Requirements/Steps for a student to be eligible for CDL (A or B) Training Course through SLL BOCES Adult Education & Workforce Development:

  1. Be 18 years of age or older
  2. Have a Valid NYS Driver’s License
  3. Prepare/Study for the CDL Permit Test (including any endorsement tests a student may want)
    • Call and schedule the CDL-Permit test at the nearest DMV
    • Be prepared to pay DMV fees for the Permit Test
    • Provide required documentation for DMV (driver’s license, social security #, etc.)
    • Pass the CDL-Permit Test
  4. Must have proof of DOT Physical
    • Locate a certified medical examiner listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. You can search for providers online through the FMCSA website.
    • Schedule an Appointment
    • Bring CDL Permit, Photo ID, and Medical Records/Current Medications to appointment
    • Complete the Physical Exam: During the appointment, the examiner will assess your overall health, vision, hearing, and any medical conditions that could affect your ability to drive.
    • Receive the Medical Certificate: If you pass the physical, you will receive a Medical Examiner’s Certificate (Form MCSA-5876). Make sure to keep a copy of this certificate for your records.
  5. Call 1-888-360-7693 to speak with receptionist Michelle Lawrence to schedule an interview for the CDL programming
    • Student should bring NYS Driver’s License, Proof of CDL Permit, Proof of DOT Physical, and Social Security # to the interview meeting

*Steps 1-5 must be completed by students on their own time. Students cannot be enrolled into CDL programming until these steps have been completed.

*Please be advised that students will have an Automatic Transmission Restriction on their CDL License*

Student(s) must complete and pass the Asynchronous Online Theory Class through JJ Keller before starting the Behind the Wheel Training. Student(s) can complete this portion of the training from home. Online Theory must be completed within 2 weeks. Upon completion of the Online Theory Instruction, we will schedule the BTW training for the student based upon the student’s availability and the instructor’s availability. Weekends and evenings are possible. Students will have 1 month to complete the BTW training from their first 1 on 1 appointment with the instructor.

CDL A Training = $5,900

  1. 10 hours of Online Classroom Work including Videos/Quizzes
  2. Student(s) must score an 80% or higher on every module/assessment
  3. 25 Hours of 1 on 1 instruction with CDL Instructor
  4. Student(s) show competency in all required BTW topic areas within 25 hours
  5. The instructor will determine if the student(s) is qualified to schedule their road test

CDL B Training = $3,900

  1. 10 hours of Online Classroom Work including Videos/Quizzes
  2. Student(s) must score an 80% or higher on every module/assessment
  3. 15 Hours of 1 on 1 instruction with CDL Instructor
  4. Student(s) show competency in all required BTW topic areas within 15 hours
  5. The instructor will determine if the student(s) is qualified to schedule their road test

Road Test Information

The CDL Road Test will be scheduled based upon the student’s availability, the instructor’s availability, and local DMV’s availability.

Additional Training can be purchased for $100 an hour if Road Test is failed by student.
